The crazy story of the group!
Tom: Bill and I were still kids when our mother decided to make a new life with a musician, Gordon. Our stepfather has devoted his life to the electric guitar. He plays in a punk band called "Fatun" and holds course in a music school in Magdeburg. As soon as we got old enough to hold a guitar without letting it fall to the ground, approximately 6 years, we had the right to play it. The magic worked once. Bill: The first time I saw Tom take the guitar, I heard something. For me, I was sure he had a gift, a natural handling of the instrument, a not-so-what that made the difference. When I could do just three chords, Tom was already at the stage of improvisation. That's why I concentrated on singing (laughing)!
Gustav: For me, music is an obsession that I have from childhood. I had my first drum kit at the age than 5 years old. Every night I fell asleep and I imagined myself on stage alone to accompany the singer Phil Collins, one of my idols when I was young. Georg: In the end it's just me I was not born with the genius of the music (laughs): I found out later down completely by accident. At school I had two classmates determined to create a rock band, they needed a bass player and I have proposed the role. The idea seduced me. I bought a bass and I joined the academy.
Georg: Our first steps on the scene were pretty pathetic (Laughs)! We believed the king of rock, but - it was obvious - we were the only ones to think so ... Tom: 'Yes, our first concert there was nothing glorious. We were still inexperienced kids. We played in small halls and at parties of the country where the public was more interested in drinking a beer listening to the artists' rookies.
Bill: When I think back to our beginnings, I think that we have been blessed in our path. For nothing in the world I would go back ... Were all agree on what kind of music to take?
Tom: We each had its own musical culture. At the time George was not listening to his Anglo-Saxon rock of Oasis and Fall Out Boy, Gustav loved Metallica, Bill was a fan of Green Day and, as for me, I was a follower of hip hop. But our different musical influences were never an obstacle for the group. Quite the contrary, led to create a true artistic alchemy.
Gustav: That we debuted along with the name Devilish ("demonic" in Italian). Our first songs were an inspiration punk, but soon evolved into a more rock sound. Who allowed you to believe? Tom: Even though it was' skeptical at first, by dint of perseverance, we improved and we start to have a small reputation in Magdeburg. Some told us that we were crazy, but there were also an increasing number of admirers to support us. And 'the enthusiasm of the public that makes us want to believe and hold on in difficult times. If it were not for an audience to applaud, we probably would have ended up dropping everything. Gustav: If Tokio Hotel is not there they did, for my part I would have kept playing, while remaining completely anonymous. I've always been passionate and ambitious. How do you feel when you are in front of thousands of your fans? Tom: Most of our fans have our age. Suddenly, there is a genuine closeness between us and that is to be phenomenal! Privately, it is the environment in the group? Gustav: We're related to each other. I, Bill, Tom and Georg form a real band of comrades. After a concert or a work commitment, we are all talking about it for four hours. We are together almost all the time, even during the days of rest.
You have spent your last vacation together?
Bill: No, not this time. Tom and I took advantage of the month of December for 15 days beginning: we needed to spend some 'alone, just him and me.
